P4: Planning

                          P4: Planning

Unit 18 Cinematography Music Video Treatment/Proposal

Concept/idea:

In our group, we are going to create a music video for the song Nightmare by Set It Off to showcase our cinematography skills. Our music video uses amplification with themes of narrative. In the music video, our character is going to be running from their darker self through different nightmare sequences. The types of nightmares we will include are Running from a shadowy figure in a dark alleyway at night and being in school again. We will also include a prologue and epilogue to develop our storyline further.

Target audience:

We are going to target teenage and young adult explorers. We chose this audience since pop punk/rock music isn’t mainstream unlike pop music. Teenagers and young adults are only just experiencing the real world. They are trying to figure out their identity and how to express/deal with their emotions.

Production team:

Creating a music video will require us to take on a lot of roles. Most importantly, we will need actors to perform, videographers to film the video, an editor to edit our music video, a set designer, costume and makeup artist. We may also need a foley artist for any foley effects we may need or include in our music video for diegetic sound

Faith’s roles: Cinematographer, foley artist, joint editor

Liam’s roles: Actor, costume and makeup artist, set designer, joint editor

Distribution:

Thanks to globalisation, we can distribute our music video quickly and globally through the internet. YouTube is a great social media to do this, and we could distribute through other social media channels. Music videos can still be seen on the TV too

Genre:

The song Nightmare by Set It Off is in the pop punk music genre. Therefore, our music video will follow the genres of pop punk music videos. MCR is a famous band in the genre. They wear dark clothing etc. They desaturated the colours in their Black Parade music video. This fits the conventions of the emo genre. In their I’m Not Okay music video, they used dark humour.

Themes/setting location:

A convention of music videos is they change locations a few times throughout. To begin with, the prologue will be set in a bedroom. The second scene location we will use an alleyway near Hungerhill School. The next scene will be based in college. Being back in school is a nightmare some people have. We will use the lecture theatre in college for our performance segment. At the end, the character will wake up again in the bedroom in the epilogue.

Legal and ethical issues:

Copyright protects an artist’s work (video, audio, graphics, books etc) from being used or copied without their permission. we will have to make sure that our music video isn’t similar to others out there, so we do not infringe the copyright law. Libel is a false written statement and slander is a false spoken statement that can damage someone’s reputation. We will not be slandering or being libel towards anyone. The victim of these damaging statements can sue them for it. Because our music video is going to contain some darker tones, we will need to be wary of the BBFC rating we give it. We will also need to create permission forms for the actors, so they agree to be in the music video.

Violence and promoting crimes (drugs, murder etc) is very unethical and children would not be allowed to watch this content. Discriminating against groups of people is also very unethical and wrong. We will need to be mindful of the violence ethical issue the most since we may contain a or illude to violence in our music video; this fits the conventions of the pop punk genre.

 Equipment List

  Equipment Name

Description (purpose and filming effect)

Canon 250D Camera

This will be our basic camera for the recording of the video. The camera has adjustable aperture and is light enough to take with us everywhere. Additionally, it will be the most high quality camera we can use.

 2x Tripods

We will require a tripod to keep our camera still whilst having static shots. Additionally, we well require a separate tripod in order to hold the studio light.

RGB studio lights (FL80 RGB)

This will be used to help us modulate the light levels in the shoot, additionally, opening options for colour changing to help connotate certain emotions or atmospheres.

Lenses

The lenses we will be using are fisheye and portrait.

General Safety

Both of us

We are going to film the alleyway scene when it is sunset, so we are safe in the environment, and we are less likely to be harmed by strangers.

Possibly film the alleyway scene on several days depending on how quickly it gets dark. We will have to walk home so this is important for our safety.

Both of us

A few days before we plan to film.

The weather and electricity

We won’t film outside when it is raining since this can damage the equipment. We will check the weather beforehand.

Don’t have any water near our equipment or a plug at all since this can damage the equipment and cause an electric fire.

Both of us

LOCATION RECCE

Prepared by

Faith Smith

Date

14.11.2022

Location Details

We are going to film in Doncaster UTC, hopefully Cast if we have permission and in an alleyway near Hungerhill School and in someone’s bedroom. This adds up to two indoor and one outdoor scene.

Scene/Purpose of filming

In our music video, the character is going to be cycling through lots of nightmare scenarios. They will be in their bedroom to start with going to sleep. These are going to be walking through an alleyway by themselves, a school nightmare and a lip sync scene where the character sings to an empty crowd.

Safety Issues

Tripping down the stairs or because of equipment

Noise

Other students talking, when the lessons change over and noise throughout the building since it can echo. This won’t matter though since we won’t need sound for our music video; our sound is the Nightmare song by Set It Off.

Here you can see I have added another set of recces. This is because we changed the locations we wanted to record in so I had to create new recces for this.

To help us visualise how our music video will look and what order our rushes will be in, we created some storyboards. These are relevant to the new locations and you will be able to see how we have followed the storyboards in our rushes.
